Dealing with Life and Death in a Fallen, Uncertain World

This is our pastor’s newsletter article for SOTHLC’s November, 2013 newsletter.   Last month, Sheri and I took our 21 year old dog, Samson, to the vet to be put to sleep.  It was heart breaking.  Yet, we felt compelled, as his health had declined so badly that his life was one of constant burden and […]

St. Michael and All Angels

On September 29th, we at SOTHLC celebrated St. Michael and All Angels. The name Michael means “Who is like God?” The Old Testament book of Daniel mentions Michael (Daniel 12:1), as well as the New Testament in Jude (v. 9) and Revelation (12:7).  The Jewish, non-biblical book of 1 Enoch, which the New Testament book of Jude […]

Understanding Alzheimer’s

This is our pastor’s article for our September newsletter.   Our fall into sin has dealt us all a cruel fate.  Sin has not only affected us, but its aftershocks have sown the seeds of decay into all creation. One of our dogs is Samson.  He’s 21 years old, hard of hearing, nearly blind, has […]

Remembering St. Peter and St. Paul on Sunday, June 30th

On June 29th, the Church remembers the Apostles Peter and Paul.  This year, we will transfer the feast to Sunday, June 30th. The festival of St. Peter and St. Paul is probably the oldest of the saints’ observances (dating from about the middle of the third century).  An early tradition held that these two pillars of the […]

Why We Sing What We Sing in Church

This is our pastor’s article for the July-August 2013 newsletter. One of the deep enigmas in the current-day church is why we sing what we sing.  Few of us have ever given much thought to that.  We grew up singing hymns in church, and we like what we like.  And we want to sing what […]
